Tetum Language Training Programme

Introduction

Training has always been a strategic activity at CIDAC. Currently, besides providing training linked to the projects, CIDAC has also got a Language Training Programme.

Training was thus present in 1974 in the first co-operation action organised, in this case, together with the Guinea Bissau Ministry of Education, and from then on it has been a constant feature of the implementation of programmes and projects for Development Co-operation undertaken and supported by CIDAC.

Within the framework of the intervention in the field of Education for Development, training has progressively gained scope and expression in what concerns the various projects undertaken, mainly from 1987 on. In the last few years, the training programmes have dealt with topics such as Intercultural Learning, Education for Development, Fair Trade, migration and Development.

Language Training Programme

In 1983 CIDAC started providing training courses of Portuguese as a foreign language especially created for development agents, diplomats and technicians of several origins, who aim to live and work in Portuguese Speaking Countries.

Combining knowledge and contact with the realities of these countries with the information available in its Documentation Centre, CIDAC has designed an active methodology of teaching Portuguese as a foreign language which is based on the communication necessities of the trainees as well as on the contents linked to history and culture, socio-economic and political situation of the countries of destination.

After a period where introduction sessions to the Creole languages spoken in Cape Verde and Guinea Bissau were undertaken, CIDAC was led to organize, from March 2003 on, training courses in Tetum since it was constitutionally adopted as one of the Official Languages of East-Timor, whose Independence was recognized on May 20th, 2002.

CIDAC has a reservation service for purposes of accommodation and babysitting as a means to support the organisations and the trainees who hold contracts for the Courses at CIDAC.
